Thursday, May 24th - 8pm - The Ironworks, Almonte
Brock Zeman is calling it the "Who Needs The Radio" tour and it's coming to the Ironworks. Brock, the Carleton Place talent who will hit the big time any day now, will share the stage with Andrew Neville and Corin Raymond. Andrew writes songs about trucks, booze and women and is the king of Winnipeg. Corin is half of The Undesireables (based in Toronto). Together the three singer-songwirters will appeal to anyone who likes the wit of a well-turned phrase and the thrill of a a sentimental chord. Because it's a triple-header, the cover charge is $15.

The Ironworks and the Miller's Tale have the incredible fortune of presenting an evening with Ottawa Citizen columnist Charles Gordon just days after his return from teaching at the National University of Rwanda.
As a muzungu (foreigner) in an emerging nation, and as a journalist with decades of experience chronicling aspects of social development, Gordon will share stories from his African experience, if his recent newspaper jottings are anything to go by. He has described rush-hour traffic in Butare, safari tourists through the eyes of locals, and student perceptions of a struggling nation. Gordon has also written about the country's efforts to move toward reconciliation. Anyone who has followed news reports from Rwanda in the last decade will be interested in spending an evening with this astute observer.
Gordon is the author of five books, including At the Cottage and The Canada Trip. His latest book, a satirical novel about newspapers, is The Grim Pig. All are published by McClelland and Stewart. Gordon has written for National Lampoon, Canadian Forum, Cottage Life and Maclean's. He has won three National Magazine Awards and been nominated three times for the Stephen Leacock Medal. When not writing his three-a-week column, Gordon still plays jazz and hangs out at Ottawa's Triple A baseball stadium. His trip to Rwanda came about as part of the Carleton School of Journalism's Rwanda Initiative.
See Charles Gordon at the Ironworks as part of the Miller's Tale Books and Beer series on Thursday, April 12, at 7:30. Please call the Ironworks at 613-256-7840 or the Miller's Tale at 613 256-9090 for your FREE ticket to attend this event.
Charles Gordon is guest speaker at the next chapter of Books and Beer, a presentation of the Miller's Tale book store held at the Ironworks Pub (www.ironworkspub.ca) in Almonte ON.
The Almonte Yoga Community proudly presents Crystal Journey with David Hickey in concert at the Almonte Old Town Hall. Based in Mount Hope, Ontario, David Hickey has been touring Canada from coast to coast for the past three years, performing more than 200 crystal bowl concerts, and releasing five CDs to date. He is presently touring with visual artist Eden Martin. Join us for a magical evening as we escape with David on a Crystal Journey filled with music, sound and vibration with the healing tones of quartz crystal bowls, paiste gongs, and chakra chimes!
David has performed in concert with various vocalists, and has been accompanied by instruments such as the harp, piano, keyboard, guitar, mandolin, flute, didgeridoo, orchestra bells, tabla and djembe. Performing with the Winnipeg Chamber Orchestra in June 2006 was one of the highlights of last year. David will also be performing with his special guest, Gary Diggins, at the Glenn Gould Studio (a CBC venue) in Toronto on April 27 — the week prior to the concert at the Almonte Old Town Hall.
Every concert that David performs is unique — from the chosen venue to the sound of the crystal bowls lingering in the air amidst the beautiful tones of paiste gongs, chakra chimes, a vibraphone, and other delightful organic instruments that add the finishing touches to this amazing and magical event. Each of David’s performances is totally improvised, and it is always his intent to create beautiful, meditative, and healing music. The intuitive music that David creates is mastered through the sound and vibration of more than 20 quartz crystal singing bowls. Each bowl is digitally tuned to the notes of C D E F G A and B so that they correspond to the 7 main chakras (energy centres) of the body. The diameter of the bowl, ranging from 6" to 22", determines the pitch. Each of the paiste gongs also features a strong fundamental note. It is like having a full orchestra performing!
Tickets for this performance are $23, available in advance at 256–7117 or 256–2361, or at the door. A portion of the proceeds will support a local charity. Still want to find out more about David Hickey and his Crystal Journey? Visit his website at <www.crystaljourney.ca>

The Saints n' Sinners was established in Perth about 10 years ago when two local men of the cloth got together with a couple of layabouts to make a little noise. The group prides itself on playing a blend of blues and jazz with a bit of Dixieland, honky tonk or hymns included in the mix. They will use any tune left about unguarded from the most formal of hymn tunes to spirituals, jazz standards and the occasional sappy ballad in need of some spice. The group consists of Jim Bailey(string bass), Larry Paul(keyboard), Peter Woods(saxophones) and Peter Wand(clarinet). No we're not saying which are the saints and which the sinners, there's a little bit if the devil in all of us.
This is the last Friday Jazz in the Restaurant. Jazz at JR's is moving back downstairs to the Pub on April 27th. The group appearing on that night will be the Dave Renaud trio, Dave has played JR's previously under the name Dr.Jazz.
